The Saints defender completed a sensational £30m move to Old Trafford last after successfully completing a medical at the club's Carrington training ground.
United had been chasing the 18-year-old since the final day of last season and lodged a £27m bid for the defender shortly after their 1-1 draw at St Mary's last month.
The bid was immediately rejected by Saints, and club officials insisted that they had no desire to sell any of their star players.
But the club changed their mind following the departure of former manager Mauricio Pochettino, who moved to Tottenham earlier this month.
The £30m deal to take Shaw to Old Trafford has made the England defender the world's most expensive teenager.
“I don't think too many are going to spend that on a young kid”
Andy Cole
Former United striker Andy Cole, who spent six years at Old Trafford, has questioned Shaw's hefty price-tag and believes that the Red Devils could have found much cheaper option in Europe.
He said: "It's a hell of a lot of money.
"I don't think too many are going to spend that on a young kid.
" I know that he's English as well, its a big plus that he is English, but I think that's why so many managers go for foreign imports as they're cheaper.
Despite his opinion on Shaw's huge transfer fee Cole, 42, is confident that the young left-back will flourish at Old Trafford.
He said: He's going to be a very good player, he keeps improving, he'll be a good player."
